TAHLEQUAH — A preliminary hearing has been tentatively set for a woman accused of killing a Hulbert man last year.

Misty Coleen Richardson is facing charges of first-degree manslaughter and desecration of a human body. She appeared in Cherokee County District Court Wednesday, where a judge set Richardson for a preliminary hearing March 11 at 9 a.m. in front of Special District Judge Sandy Crosslin.

Richardson allegedly admitted to investigators last year that she shot and killed Herbert Lee Potts, then tried to bury his body on her property in the Lost City area.

Richardson told investigators muriatic acid and lye were poured on Potts’ body in an attempt to hide his death, according to authorities.

Richardson was jailed on a $35,000 bond, and a reduction of bond was denied in December. Richardson was also ordered to undergo a competency evaluation last year, and later stipulated to her competency, according to court records.

Records show 39-year-old Richardson has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
