Lunch with the Press: Kirk's Kitchen By BOB GIBBINS TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS — For years, there’s been a diner at the corner of First and Muskogee, and it has operated under a number of names.
Right now, it’s Kirk’s Diner, and it’s a friendly, affordable place to spend your lunch hour. But don’t worry: It won’t take nearly that long to get your food. You can spend the rest of the time visiting with friends or enjoying one of the homemade desserts. If you’re in the mood for a “blue plate special,” Kirk’s is a good choice. You may even be like I was last Thursday and get yours served on an actual blue plate. I’m one of those people who likes a meat-and-potatoes meal when I can get it, so I was pleased to see the special was roast beef and mashed potatoes, with a choice of brown beans or corn, and salad or coleslaw, plus cornbread or a dinner roll. Those who didn’t want salad or slaw could have more potatoes, beans or corn. The price for the meal was less than $6, which is very economical in these times. If you’re not in the mood for a blue plate special, Kirk’s has hamburgers, cheeseburgers, salads, a three-way spaghetti (chili and spaghetti noodles) and an excellent breakfast menu, served from the entire time the doors are open. That’s 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, by the way. On another occasion, I’ve tried the eggs, sausage and toast, and it gets my seal of approval as well. Kirk’s also offers a mammoth-sized pancake for those with an especially hearty appetite. Next time you’re in the mood for a “blue plate special,” breakfast or a good burger, drop in at Kirk’s Diner, 902 S. Muskogee. They’ll treat you right.
