Lunch with the Press: Southside Drive-In By TEDDYE SNELL TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS — The old adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” certainly applies to the menu at Southside Drive In.
Many area residents know the restaurant at 1216 S. Muskogee Ave. as Risenhoover’s; however, it was recently purchased by Tony Nottingham. Diners may not have noticed, as Nottingham has maintained the menu of drive-in favorites, with the exception of adding a couple of items, including one of my favorites: cheddar peppers. For those who haven’t tried them, an order of cheddar peppers consists two jalapenos sliced in half, stuffed with cheddar cheese, breaded then deep-fried. Not exactly Alli diet-friendly, but I was taking a break to enjoy some classic drive-in fare. For the main course, I chose a steak sandwich. At Southside, the sandwich is a reasonable size, with a breaded, deep-fried steak cutlet topped with lettuce and mayonnaise. I added a large Dr. Pepper to drink and paid a reasonable price of $7.44 for all three items. Those in a rush may want to phone in their lunch ahead of time, as each order is made fresh while you wait. If you’re someone who has to take their lunch at high noon, you may find a line at both the drive-through and walk-up counters. In addition to sandwiches, burgers, fries, tater tots, onion rings and fries, Southside also offers dinners, including chicken, fish and shrimp or a combination of two of the three. Dinners run a little over $5, and include fries, slaw and hushpuppies. For those looking for something a little sweeter, the drive-in also offers a full line of creamy confections, including soft-serve cones, sundaes and banana splits. If you’re interested in taking a trip back in time to enjoy food from your teenage years, you won’t find any better than that served up by Nottingham and his family at Southside Drive-In, a decades-old Tahlequah dining tradition.
