Drink your milk; it’s good for you. We grow up hearing the virtues of milk, yet many people don’t get the recommended three servings per day of dairy products essential to make and keep the body healthy. Nutritionists recommend that people consume three cups of milk, or the essential, per day. But if drinking milk is something you gave up along with those grade school lunches, don’t despair. June is National Dairy Month, and it’s a good time to try a few new dairy recipes, or, if you’re lactose intolerant, to try some new alternatives to milk products. “There are many ways to incorporate dairy into your diet,” said Michelle Goss, clinical dietitian at Cherokee Nation Three Rivers Health Center. She suggests the following • Yogurt dips with veggies. • Low-fat shredded cheese on soups and salads. • Low-fat cottage cheese with fruit. • Using evaporated skim milk in recipes that call for cream. • Puddings, string cheese or yogurt for snacks. • Adding milk instead of water to canned soups. That old standby, tomato soup, is much tastier when made with milk. • Making oatmeal or hot chocolate with low-fat milk instead of water. • Using calcium-fortified bread in sandwiches.
