Fans of Elvis, Route 66, Coca-Cola and chrome will feel right at home when they step into Boom A Rang diner at 116 S. Muskogee Ave.
Some may remember the diner’s previous incarnation as Jerry’s, but the location is where the similarities end.
Boom A Rang features standard diner fare, including breakfast served all day long, burgers, blue plates and much more. The friendly wait staff is decked out in tye-die T-shirts and always have a warm hello for every visitor who walks through the door.
Daily Press Readers voted the cafe best in breakfast and blue plate specials this year. However, I was craving an old-fashioned burger on a toasted bun.
In my continuing quest for the perfect burger, I selected the hickory cheddar burger, which is fried to diner perfection on a flat grill, then topped with cheddar cheese, red onions, pickles, lettuce, tomato and a tangy hickory sauce with a toasted bun.
Feeling particularly indulgent, I also had to have a side of cheese fries, which are also topped with grated cheddar. I added a large, frosty Coca-Cola, served in the vintage Coca Cola-shaped glass with lots of shaved - not cubed - ice.
The entire meal came in under $8 and was served quickly, despite a noon rush.
If you’re feeling particularly ravenous, I’d recommend giving the chicken fried steak dinner a try. The beef is hand-dredged on site and the portion is big enough to share. The meal comes with a dinner salad, mashed or fried potatoes, gravy and toast for under $10, and you’ll need a doggie bag, trust me.
Other house specialties you might want to try include a genuine rueben sandwich, the beef stew, or the super chili cheeseburger supreme.
If you’re in the mood for breakfast, Boom A Rang will not disappoint. I generally go for the big breakfast, which consists of two eggs, three bacon or sausage, hash browns and toast or biscuits and gravy. For a heartier appetite, I’d suggest going for broke with the steak and eggs, which includes a 5-ounce sirloin, two eggs, hash browns and toast or biscuits and gravy.
Regardless of what you have in mind for breakfast, lunch or dinner, Boom A Rang has the fare to fit the bill.
