Review: Katfish Kitchen By JOSH NEWTON Cherokee County is lucky to have so many great places to get friendly service for a lunch-time meal. But one of my favorites has always been Katfish Kitchen. There’s always a smile – in fact, lots of smiles – and plenty of friendly service.
Visitors will soon notice additional menu items like southwest chicken, according to owner John Garrison. He says every once in a while, new items must be added. Last Friday, I tried the barbecue pork loin sandwich with a pickle spear, red onion, and french fries. If fries aren’t up your alley, substitute tater tots for free, or onion rings for 75 cents. The sandwich – piled with smoked pork, and topped with barbecue sauce – made an excellent and filling lunch for $6.49 (plus tax, of course). For many, the best way to go at Katfish Kitchen during the lunch hour might be a number of daily lunch specials for $6.49. Monday’s special is hot roast beef with green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, and Texas toast; Tuesday’s is two chicken tenders with corn, mashed potatoes and white gravy, and Texas toast; and Wednesday’s is chicken fried steak with corn, mashed potatoes and white gravy, and Texas toast. Thursday, diners can enjoy hamburger steak with green beans, mashed potatoes and brown gravy, and Texas toast; Friday, fish with slaw, beans, fries and hushpuppies; or Saturday, deluxe club or grilled chicken club sandwich served with fries, tots or onion rings. (I invited my grandma to eat with me Friday, and she ordered the lunch special. It was more than enough, and our waitress said it is probably the biggest special on the menu.) Plate lunches are also available Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and cost from $4.99 to $6.99. After lunch and a little rest, try some of the tasty looking desserts: homemade fried pie with ice cream for $3.99; strawberry dumplings for $1.59 (add ice cream for 99 cents); or ice cream for $1.29.
