The Black Dog Café, which opened in April, specializes in making its food as fresh as possible – from the vegetables, most of which they grow themselves, to the desserts, all of which they make from scratch. What vegetables they can’t grow themselves, they get from the local Farmers’ Market. When I went in there last week, I ordered a veggie sandwich with fresh cucumbers, bell peppers, lettuce and tomatoes, as well as cheddar cheese and mayonnaise, along with a cup of potato salad and a banana nut chocolate bread – all for just a little over $5. As soon as you enter the café, you will notice the entire building is completely decorated with black dogs; hence the name. There are black dogs everywhere, from portraits to figurines. Sandwiches include a BLT, ham, roast beef, turkey, chicken salad, pulled pork and tuna. Most are priced from $3.50 to $4.25. However, the hamburger fanatic will note a hamburger costs $69.95. That’s obviously a joke. Below the hamburger price is in parenthesis, “We don’t do hamburgers.” They also have hot dogs, soups, salads, and fantastic desserts, which can include anything from chocolate brownies to cakes to pie, and every once in a while, a slice of banana bread. They now carry smoothies for $4.50, including your choice of any two fruits. I usually get strawberries and bananas. Of course, I love anything with bananas in it. They also sell a smoothie called a Orange Julio, which is a drink similar to the Orange Julius, with the exception of the name. Their sides menu include cups of potato salad, cole slaw and nonfat cottage cheese. They will also work with you if you want an order that is not on the menu. My veggie sandwich isn’t on the menu, but they asked me what vegetables I wanted and stuck them on a sandwich. The hours are a bit short; they are only open during the lunch hour, Monday though Saturday.
