Lunch with the Press: Carl's Jr.

TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS

One thing you should know about the Six Dollar Burgers at Carl’s Jr. None of them cost $6, unless you get the combo, and then they cost more than $6. But you’ll get plenty of bang for your buck.

Several years ago, Tahlequah had a Carl’s Jr., right by our office. The new location at 1850 S. Muskogee may be more convenient, and most visitors are already commenting that the service is much better. As for the menu, it’s more diverse than before, and most of the burgers are huge, like Carl’s claims.

The new Carl’s restaurant sports a modern design, no doubt planned with the tween and teen set in mind. XBoxes are available for the kids to play while they wait a short time for their meals. And there’s a price to fit every budget.

Carl’s offers hand-cut fries with the peels still on, and the burgers are bigger than what you’ll get most anywhere else. The Six Dollar Burgers play the starring role, featuring seven tasty varieties: original, chili cheese, bacon cheese, guacamole, western bacon, jalapeno and low-carb.

My son and I have tried the bacon cheese, and I had trouble finishing mine because of its size (although my son easily wolfed his down). It probably didn’t help that I ordered the generously portioned large fries. A friend of mine says the jalapeno burger is her favorite, while another goes for the guacamole. My husband said the Prime Rib Burger – which features the hamburger patty, thin-sliced prime rib, horseradish sauce, swiss cheese and grilled onions – is tasty, but he recommends the Six Dollar version.

Carl’s has also retained some classics, such as the Famous Star and Super Star, and some of their other popular sandwiches.

The Bacon Swiss Crispy Chicken, which was my son’s favorite when he was little, is still on the menu – and it’s still just as good. There are also charbroiled chicken sandwiches for the lighter-minded, and some fish options.

Inside the restaurant, there’s a poster bearing an old Carl’s menu from days gone by. It lets visitors know that at one time, Carl’s sold a pastrami dip sandwich. (Indeed, some locations sell a burger with thin-sliced pastrami, like the Prime Rib version). My husband would like to see that return to the menu, since he grumbles about the lack of good pastrami in the area.

Carl’s burgers are a big cut above the typical fast-food variety, and with so many styles to choose from, you’re sure to find your niche. You may wait a bit for your meal, but it’s worth it.
