Occasionally, it’s nice to break from my tradition of having lunch at my desk. Sometimes, I’ll grab a book and look for someplace inviting to spend an hour away from ringing phones and fluorescent lighting the Daily Press provides. And there’s no better place, in my opinion, to get a panoramic view of Tahlequah than Patron Mexican Grill on top of the hill on South Muskogee Avenue, near Oak Hill Suites. Upon entering the restaurant, I was seated quickly by the host, who was followed by a waitress ready to help me with my drink order. I was impressed with the remodeling job from Jasper’s to Patron. The chairs and booths are painted in bright colors, reminiscent of Frida Kahlo’s home in Mexico, with bright yellows, reds, oranges and blues. I was seated next to the windows, and had a great view of the city. After receiving my drink, a waiter brought the standard basket of chips and salsa. The salsa was delicious and fresh - not cooked - very similar to what I make at home. The chips were cut thick, which some people love. I prefer the thinner kind, but these held up to the fresh salsa quite well. I had a hard time deciding from Patron’s vast lunch offerings, which include huevos rancheros, huevos chorizo, fajitas and flautas, along with the standard specials featuring tacos, enchiladas and other south-of-the-border delights. I selected the Burrito Patron with shredded chicken. The entree was huge, and I was unable to finish it all, as it was served with a side of rice and beans. It could be that I, like others, filled up on the chips and salsa pre-meal. The shredded chicken in the burrito was flavorful and well-seasoned, and the meal was delivered in a timely fashion. The lunch entree, complete with chips, salsa and a bottomless glass of iced tea came to $8.61 – a fair price by most people’s standards, for the amount of food provided.
