Lunch with the Press: Iguana Cafée By TRAVIS METCALF TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS — Whether you want to bask outside on the patio on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, or sit inside during a cold winter to enjoy a homey atmosphere, the Iguana Cafée, 500A N. Muskogee, a block south of Northeastern State University, can cater to your needs.
The menu has everything for meat cravers to vegetarians, both people who eat dairy products and vegans, and people who want substantial portions, but yet healthy foods. The last time I went there, I bought the Garden Snake, which is the restaurant’s vegetarian alternative. It features cucumbers, sprouts, tomatoes, provolone cheese, red onion, bell pepper and avocado spread, along with your choice of either mayonnaise or Iguana spread, which is a cream cheese concoction. You get your choice of sides: chips and salsa, a bag of chips, a salad, potato salad and pasta salad. My meal, including the sandwich and chips and salsa, cost just a little more than $7. All of Iguana’s sandwiches are named after reptiles or amphibious creatures, including The Iguana, which is a sandwich with roast turkey breast and smoked ham, along with cheddar cheese and veggies, The Crocodilian is a lean roast beef sandwich with veggies, cheddar cheese and hot dijon mustard, and The Rattler has roast turkey breast and lean bacon rolled in a cheddar wrap, along with veggies. Most of the meals cost between $6 and $7. They also have smoothies, including strawberry-banana, four-berry blend, peach pear, mango tropics or lemonade. For those cold winter days, hot drinks consist of a cafe latte, cafe mocha, cappuccino, and hot chocolate, among other favorites. Most drinks, either the smoothies or the hot drinks, cost between $2-$3. The atmosphere is relaxed. Unlike at many fast-food joints where the point is to feed as many people as possible and rush you out of the building as quickly possible, Iguana is a place where people can sit and enjoy a good meal while reading a book, doing research on the Internet or just hanging out with some friends. Many students go to the Iguana and do their homework while munching on a muffin or sipping a cup of coffee. The restaurant is in two stories, with an upstairs and a downstairs, and can be reserved for parties. If you’re lucky, during the evening, you might get to hear some live music while you dine.
