Lunch with the Press: Long John Silver's/A&W

I’m not revealing any trade secrets or issuing an unexpected insult when I say the fried fare at Long John Silver’s is not conducive to slim waistlines. So even though my husband and son have always loved fish (fried or otherwise), we generally limit our LJS dining excursions to Friday nights during Lent.
The other day, though, it wasn’t Lent, and I was actually able to indulge in a treat I don’t normally have: the chicken planks. It was part of a new platter that offers two kinds of shrimp, fish, and the aforementioned chicken plank, along with coleslaw, french fries and LJS’s hush puppies, which are really good by anyone’s standards. My husband also had a platter, but instead of the second batch of shrimp, it featured lobster bites. (He didn’t care for them much, but my son loves them.)
The platters at LJS – and now there are nearly 10 of them – are the best deal if you’re especially hungry. If not, the baskets – which usually have a piece of chicken or fish, or a combination of the two, plus fries – will hit the spot. And they’re easy on the wallet.
The important thing to remember when eating at LJS is to at least try the malt vinegar with your fish. Some people simply must have the tartar sauce or ketchup with their fish, but once you try the malt vinegar – a la British style fish ‘n’ chips – you probably won’t go back. I’ve always been a fan of the fried shrimp, with a side of cocktail sauce; in fact, I usually order extra a la cart, much to my waistline’s peril.
With the addition of A&W products to the LJS lineup, more variety is available for those of you who aren’t into the fish. The burgers are decent, and so are the ice cream treats; there are several new varieties of the latter. And of course, there’s that terrific A&W root beer on tap; that’s always a must with any meal, and be sure to order it in a frosty mug.
The service at LJS is normally quick and friendly, and for the lunch crowd, a drive-through service is convenient. The only thing you might want to avoid if you’re in a hurry is the fried clams; you’ll wait a bit for those.
And since the remodel a few years ago that accompanied the A&W merger, the interior ambiance can even be fun, compared to most fast-food joints. The juke box keeps churning out those hits, both the oldies and the newer models.
LJS is one of the better alternatives for lunch in Tahlequah. There’s more variety than you might realize, and you won’t spend a fortune. Unless you order those a la cart extras, that is!
