The American Association of University Women Tahlequah Branch will begin the 2015-2016 year with an Ice Cream Social on Monday, Sept. 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Norris Park, 400 N. Muskogee Ave.

Co-Presidents Dr. Sarah Turner McGowen and Molly Turner will welcome members and guests as they visit informally about the plans for the upcoming year. Anyone interested in learning more about the organization is invited to attend.

The AAUW Tahlequah Branch is part of the National AAUW headquartered in Washington, D. C. This organization has over 170,000 women who are members in about 1,000 branches across the nation. Northeastern State University is one of 800 College and University Partners.

AAUW's mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. AAUW is the nation's leading voice promoting equity and education for women and girls. Since its founding in 1881, AAUW members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day - educational, social, economic, and political. The members belong to a community that breaks through educational and economic barriers so that all women and girls have a fair chance.

Nationally, AAUW provides many scholarships and grants to advance educational and professional opportunities for women in the United States and around the globe. The AAUW Tahlequah Branch joins in this effort by providing an undergraduate scholarship and a graduate scholarship for women attending NSU. In the recent years, it has also provided scholarships for women to attend the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders held each year at the University of Maryland in College Park.

AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership. Membership is open to anyone holding an associate's (or equivalent, e.g. RN), bachelor's, or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Because NSU is an AAUW Partner Affiliate, students have the opportunity to become an E-Student affiliate for free.

Anyone having questions about this event may contact AAUW Vice President of Programs Dr. Renee Cambiano at For more information about membership, email the AAUW Vice President of Membership Peggy Glenn at
