Published July 18, 2008 12:35 pm - Charges to be filed in cutting assault case Press staff reports TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS — Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies arrested a local woman this week on an assault charge.
Irma Jean Bell Strong, 57, allegedly cut Lawanda Ross Monday with a knife. Ross, 35, was treated for a 12-inch cut to her upper left arm and other scrapes to her arm and hand. Sheriff’s Deputy Bob Sanders’ report states Ross drove herself to the hospital, where she was treated and released. Strong said that as she was returning home from her job at the Cherokee County Detention Center, she saw Ross pulling away from the house. Strong told deputies she saw clothes strewn on her property. Ross said she had been leaving the area, after taking some of Strong’s husband’s clothing back to his home, when she saw Strong. She said Strong began to follow her, and she stopped to let Strong pass her. That is allegedly when the assault occurred. Strong told Sanders she was acting in self-defense and that Ross was trespassing on her property. The weapon allegedly used was not found. Charges are expected to be filed in district court.
