Published September 01, 2008 01:48 pm - They evidently sold booze and tobacco to under-age buyers. Police cite local retailers Tahlequah police issued citations recently to some local retail establishments for selling beer and tobacco products to underage buyers.
Sgt. Randy Tanner said violators were issued tickets directing them to appear in municipal court. Four volunteer buyers between the ages of 16-20 were sent into stores to determine whether clerks would sell them beer or cigarettes. Tanner, coordinator of the project, said the “buyers” made beer purchases at three locations. Cigarettes were bought at two separate stores. Tanner said a person has to be 21 to legally buy beer and 18 to legally buy tobacco products. “We went to seven or eight places that wouldn’t sell beer or tobacco,” he said. Tanner said TPD officers also recently conducted checks for underage drinkers and found some inside the clubs. Two DUIs were arrested that night and one of them turned into a felony drug possession case, he said. Club EFFX, Ned’s, Granny’s Attic, and Whiskey Jim’s were also checked by the officers. The officers also visited two residential parties to check for underage drinkers, said Police Chief Steve Farmer. “I’ve received several complaints of underage drinking,” Farmer said. “We targeted those establishments and some residential parties.” The police chief said violations of the liquor and tobacco laws won’t be tolerated.
