Published September 04, 2008 12:18 pm - Bickel: Holiday crowd was well-behaved By BOB GIBBINS TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS — The Cherokee National Holiday and Labor Day holiday crowd was apparently well-behaved.
Cherokee County Detention Center Administrator Loyd Bickel said there was no major increase in jail population during the holiday weekend. He told Cherokee County Governmental Building Authority members the largest influx of people came Sunday night, when 25 were booked. The population stood at 77 inmates Tuesday morning. Sheriff Norman Fisher, CCGBA member, said his office didn’t have a large number of calls or any problems attributed to the holiday. Bickel said two of the inmates are on medical watch. The administrator said Don Garrison, head of the jail inspection division for the Oklahoma Department of Health, said the facility isn’t experiencing the crowding conditions that a lot of other state jails are facing. The jail had 101 inmates at the last CCGBA meeting, Aug. 20. Bickel said a jail training school will begin next week. He also told the board he is moving a detention officer off a shift to supervise the trash detail that will begin soon. In response to a question, he said the CCDC is fully staffed. What’s next The next regular meeting of the Cherokee County Governmental Building Authority will be Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 9 a.m. in the conference room at the Cherokee County Detention Center.
