Published October 03, 2008 10:03 am - Stilwell man arraigned in federal assault case By BOB GIBBINS Staff Writer TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS — MUSKOGEE – A Stilwell man is scheduled to appear in federal court this afternoon for a preliminary and detention hearing on an assault charge.
Jeremy Dewayne Grimmett, 29, was arraigned Thursday on a count of assault with a dangerous weapon. Charges stem from an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Adair County Sheriff’s Office and the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service, said U.S. Attorney Sheldon Sperling. Federal prosecutors allege Grimmett was in an altercation July 12 and retrieved a pistol. He fired it into the air and hit an individual in the head, with the pistol knocking him to the ground. Sperling said Grimmett continued hitting the victim on the head with the pistol. A bystander who approached Grimmett during the assault was threatened by Grimmett with the same pistol. The individuals got in a car and started to drive off when Grimmett fired at their vehicle and shot into the hood, disabling the car. Grimmett was ordered detained by U.S. marshals pending a jury trial. Sperling said the charge carries a possible penalty of 10 years in prison and/or up to $250,000 in fines and a $100 special assessment, Sperling said. Assistant U.S. Attorney Dean Burris represents the government.
