Man dies in Saturday night house fire

TAHLEQUAH — The state fire marshal's office is investigating after a local man died in a house fire Saturday night just off of Stick Ross Mountain Road.

Tahlequah Fire Chief Ray Hammons said firefighters were called to the home on West 782 Road at about 8:42 p.m. When crews arrived, a large portion of the home was engulfed in flames.

"We were told there might be somebody in the house, so we got the fire knocked down to a safe level and sent a team in to do a search," said Hammons. "We did find one victim."

Hammons identified the victim as Billy Robinson, 66. The state fire marshal's office, along with an agent from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, responded to the scene.

Hammons said the state fire marshal will conduct an investigation into the blaze.

"We know the fire started in the kitchen area," Hammons said.

Hammons said contacting the state fire marshal is protocol in a fatality house fire. The ATF agent who responded to the scene often offers investigative assistance as a service to the community, the chief said.
