NSU tennis reaches 20 wins

— SHAWNEE — The No. 37-ranked Northeastern State women’s tennis team reached the 20-win mark after defeating Oklahoma Baptist 6-3 Monday on the OBU Tennis Courts.

The RiverHawks improved to 20-2 and will now prepare for the 2013 MIAA Women’s Tennis Championship later this week in Springfield, Mo.

“Reaching 20 wins is a great accomplishment, and it’s nice to see all of our hard work paying off on the courts,” NSU coach Amanda Stone said. “There is a lot of season left, and we will continue to work hard so we can achieve our goals.”

NSU took an early 2-1 lead following doubles competition. Senior Ivana Belejova and freshman Kristina Savchenkov were the first off court following an 8-2 triumph over Ashlynn Abbe and Eliso Brito at the third flight.

Junior Martina Bruzikova and sophomore Barbora Jirickova posted an 8-1 win on the second court over Mariana Rosa and Camden Rodriguez, and OBU’s tandem of Anastasyia Baranova and Lilian Fereirra topped NSU’s junior team of Houda Bellamine and Jeanne Mallem 8-5 on the first court.

The Bisons (11-9) quickly tied the team score at 2-2 after Baranova, the No. 6-ranked player in the NAIA, defeated Bellamine 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.

Belejova pushed the RiverHawks ahead with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Rosa on the third court, and Bruzikova made the score 4-2 in favor of the visitors when she topped Brito 6-3, 6-0 on the fourth court.

Oklahoma Baptist received a third point at the second flight when Fereirra, the No. 15-ranked singles player in the NAIA, defeated Mallem 6-4, 6-3.

Jirickova clinched the victory for Northeastern State after defeating Abbe 6-2, 6-1 on the fifth court. Freshman Lucia Cerchlanova added a sixth point for the RiverHawks with a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6) over Kelsi Lord at the bottom of the order.

NSU women golfers get 2nd

ST. LOUIS — The Northeastern State women’s golf team finished second after Monday’s final round of the Triton Spring Invitational at the par-70, 5,800-yard Norwood Country Club.

The RiverHawks began the day in a tie for first with Grand Valley State, but a final-round 324 landed the team in second at 83-over-par 643. GVSU won the tournament after shooting 311 in the final round to end at 70-over 630.

Senior Whitney McAteer placed second after shooting a final-round 75 to finish at 13-over 153 (78-75). Kelly Hartigan of Grand Valley State took home individual honors after firing a 7-over 147 (74-73).

NSU senior Kelsey Kirkpatrick (79-84) and freshman McCandren Lewis (78-85) tied for 12th at 23-over 163.

Next up for NSU will be the 2013 MIAA Women’s Golf Championship April 22-23 in Smithville, Mo.

The NSU men’s golf team is currently in second place at the MSSU Invitational in Joplin, Mo.

The RiverHawks fired an opening-round total of 11-over-par 299 and sit just six strokes behind No. 18-ranked Central Oklahoma (293). The total for NSU was the fifth sub-300 score this season.

NSU senior Kyle Fouts is tied with Washburn’s Trey Seigel in third place after carding a 1-under 71.
