SMITHVILLE, Mo. – The Northeastern State women’s golf team finds itself in second place after Monday’s opening round of the 2013 MIAA Women’s Golf Championship, which is being held on The Posse course at the Paradise Pointe Golf Complex.
The RiverHawks have four players in the top 10, with senior Kelsey Kirkpatrick tied for third after carding a 4-over-par 76. Freshman McCandren Lewis is in solo sixth after shooting 5-over 77, while sophomore Alex Koch is tied for seventh at 6-over 78.
Senior Whitney McAteer fired a 7-over 79 to tie for ninth, and freshman Kayla Schroeder carded an 11-over 83 to tie for 19th.
The team shot a total of 22-over 310 and stands just nine shots back of first-round leader Central Oklahoma. The No. 12-ranked Bronchos shot an opening-round 301. Northwest Missouri State sits in third at 36-over 324.
The final round will be contested at Paradise Pointe April 23.
RiverHawks sit in 6th at MIAA Championship
The Northeastern State men’s golf team is slotted in sixth after Monday’s first two rounds of the 2013 MIAA Championship, which is being contested on The Outlaw course at Paradise Pointe Golf Complex.
The RiverHawks opened with a two-round total of 28-over-par 604 (300-304) and sit seven shots behind fifth-place Nebraska-Kearney (300-297=597).
No. 18-ranked Central Oklahoma leads the tournament at 8-under 568 (279-289), while Central Missouri is second at 10-over 586 (291-295).
Sophomore Josh Strimple leads Northeastern State at 4-over 148. He opened with a 72 and shot 76 in the second round to sit in a tie for 12th.
Senior Jacob Bartel is tied for 24th at 7-over 151 (74-77), while freshman Jackson Hess is tied for 31st at 9-over 153 (79-74). Junior Zach Tucker is tied for 33rd at 10-over 154 (76-78), and senior Kyle Fouts is tied for 36th at 11-over 155 (78-77).
The final round will be held Tuesday at Paradise Pointe.
