Phillips, Valcarcel named First-Team All-Region

Seniors Jessy Phillips and Renee’ Valcarcel were both named to the 2013 Daktronics NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer All-Central Region First Team in an announcement Monday.

Three other RiverHawks, senior forward Jennifer Clark, senior midfielder Elizabeth Cudjoe and true freshman goalkeeper Jordan Woodruff, landed on the All-Central Region Second Team. NSU tied with Central Missouri and Minnesota State for the most honorees (5) from the region.

Northeastern State (15-4) finished runners-up in the MIAA this year and also broke school record for wins in a single season, fewest goals allowed (14) and shutouts (11).

Phillips was the only player from the league to win the MIAA Defensive Athlete of the Week award twice. She started all 19 matches and led NSU in minutes played (1,734), serving as the team’s defensive sweeper.

Valcarcel was the team’s top defensive midfielder and has started every match for Northeastern State over the past three years. She finished in the top 10 in the MIAA this year in goals scored (6) and was third in game-winning goals (3). She ended the year with 13 points.

Clark led the MIAA in game-winning goals (5) and was also the league leader in both goals (9) and points (20) before suffering a season-ending injury. Despite missing six matches, she still managed to finish third in the conference and led NSU in both goals and points. She finished her career fifth in school history in goals scored (20) and points (52).

Cudjoe, a first-team all-region performer a year ago, finished fifth in the conference in points (19) and assists (5), while finishing sixth in goals (7). She also scored three game winners and ended her two-year career fifth in school history in assists (14), while finishing eighth in points (42).

Woodruff won the MIAA Goalkeeper of the Week accolade a record five times, and she was also named the Disney Soccer/NSCAA National Player of the Week once. She led the MIAA in saves percentage (.861), shutouts (11), minutes played (1,738), and most wins in net (15). She also finished second in goals-against average (0.72). Woodruff started all 19 matches for NSU and already owns the school record for career shutouts and she twice had four-straight matches with clean sheets.

Cudjoe, Phillips, Valcarcel, and Woodruff were all named to the All-MIAA First Team earlier this season, while Clark landed on the All-MIAA Second Team.

The Daktronics All-Central Region teams were voted on by the region’s Sports Information Directors. Phillips and Valcarcel will now move on to the All-American ballot, which will be announced Dec. 4.
