NSU uses extra innings to pull off sweep of Washburn

NSU recaps

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Northeastern State baseball team needed 11 innings to complete the sweep, but got the job done with an 11-6 victory over Washburn Saturday afternoon at Jerry Robertson Field.

The RiverHawks upped their overall and league records to 15-13, while the Ichabods fell to 5-19 overall and 5-18 in the MIAA.

“We played really well all weekend,” NSU coach Travis Janssen said. “Any time you can get a sweep, at home or away, it is a great weekend.”

Seven NSU players recorded multiple hits as the RiverHawks belted 22 hits overall to just 14 from the home side.

Junior Kyle Singleton led the way at the plate with a 4-for-6 performance. He drove home five, scored three times and hit two home runs. Senior Trent Wilkins was 4-for-7 with a run scored and an RBI. Both senior Jordan Dallalio and sophomore Tyler Wilkins were 3-for-5.

Senior Trevor Walch (2-2) tossed the final 2 1/3 innings for Northeastern State and earned the win on the mound. He picked up a victory and two saves for NSU this weekend.

“Trevor Walch stepped up in a big way all weekend,” Janssen said. “He is feeling great and continues to want the ball in big situations.”

The two teams went back and forth over the course of the first six innings, and it was Washburn that led 6-4 heading into the top of the seventh.

A Dallalio double plated Singleton in the seventh, and senior Kegan Knight tied the game at 6-6 in the eighth after scoring on a wild pitch. He reached third after a leadoff double and a fielding error.

The Ichabods were able to get two aboard in the bottom of the ninth with just one out, but the RiverHawks got out of the jam and sent the game into extra frames.

NSU put two on base in the 10th but were unable to capitalize, and WU went down in order in the home half of the frame.

Tyler Wilkins led off the 11th with a single, and senior Greg Jackson pinch ran for his teammate. Sophomore David Weber brought home Jackson with a double to right center, and he later scored on a failed pickoff attempt that involved errors from both the pitcher and center fielder.

Senior Chad Davidson and junior Cody Robinson both found their way on base, and they touch home after Singleton blasted a three-run shot to right field that capped off the five-run frame.

Washburn went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 11th to give Northeastern State the sweep.

The two squads combined to use 11 pitchers, and WU’s Greg Mason (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings. Mark Biesma started for the Ichabods and lasted 6.0 innings. He allowed four runs on 12 hits.

Junior Addison Williams started with the ball for NSU and went 1 1/3 innings. He allowed three runs on four hits.

NSU will next travel to Pittsburg, Kan., on Wednesday for a doubleheader with Pittsburg State. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.

“We will enjoy the weekend and then work hard to build on it,” Janssen said.
