NSU’s Jones named MIAA defensive athlete of week

Northeastern State University’s Langston Jones has earned defensive athlete of the week honors in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

Northeastern State shut out Missouri Southern State in the second half on Saturday, thanks in large part to a career-high 21 tackles from Jones, a senior linebacker from Whitesboro, Texas.

The number of tackles for Jones was five more than his previous career high, and the preseason All-American now leads the MIAA in tackles per game (16.0), just as he did a year ago.

The RiverHawks lost 17-14 to Missouri Southern. NSU will be back at home this weekend to host Washburn.

OU’s Bell named Big 12 offensive player of week

NORMAN — Oklahoma quarterback Blake Bell has been named the Big 12 Conference offensive player of the week.

The junior established career highs by completing 27 of 37 passes for 413 yards and four touchdowns in Oklahoma’s 51-20 win over Tulsa on Saturday.

Bell also ran 10 times for 24 yards. Bell’s 413 passing yards were the most by an OU quarterback in his first career start, passing Sam Bradford’s record of 363 yards vs. North Texas in 2007.

It marks the second straight week that an Oklahoma player has earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors. Safety Gabe Lynn received Big 12 defensive accolades after the Sooners’ 16-7 victory over West Virginia on Sept. 7.

OSU’s Stewart named Big 12 special teams player

STILLWATER — Oklahoma State receiver Josh Stewart is the Big 12 special teams player of the week after his performance against Lamar.

Stewart scored on a 67-yard punt return and took a second punt back 41 yards to set up an OSU touchdown in lifting the Cowboys to a 59-3 win over Lamar on Saturday.

Stewart finished with 114 punt return yards for the eighth-highest single-game total in OSU history. His 67-yarder marked OSU’s first punt return for a touchdown since Josh Cooper had a 66-yarder against Troy in 2010. It was also OSU’s longest punt return since 2009.

So far this season, OSU quarterback J.W. Walsh has been named Big 12 offensive player of the week and linebacker Caleb Lavey has been picked Big 12 defensive player of the week.
