NSU men places 6th at St. Mary's golf tournament

SAN ANTONIO — The Northeastern State men’s golf team finished sixth at the 2013 St. Mary’s/Bruce Williams Memorial Invitational, which was held on the par-72, 6,937-yard course at The Dominion Country Club.

The RiverHawks posted a final-round score of 304 Tuesday to finish at 26-over-par 890, and they were jumped by Texas A&M-Commerce and its score of 24-over 888 (final round 298).

Wayland Baptist took home the team title with a score of 10-over 874 (287-286-301), while No. 23 Western New Mexico landed in second at 12-over 876 (288-285-303).

Freshman Marc Johnson carded a team-best final-round score of 74 to finish at 5-over 221 and tie for 12th. Sophomore Jackson Hess stumbled to a 78 and finished T-17 at 6-over 222.

Junior Josh Strimple shot 77 Tuesday and tied for 21st at 7-over 223, and freshman Tate Williamson carded a 75 to earn a share of 25th at 9-over 225. Sophomore Michael Varner landed at 18-over 234 and finished at T-50.

Anders Ellingsberg of Wayland Baptist shot 4-under (67-72-73=212) for the tournament to win individual honors.

Northeastern State has closed out its five-tournament fall campaign and will now be out of action until February.

NSU women pick up bronze in MIAA Fall Preview

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The Northeastern State women’s golf team finished third at the MIAA Fall Preview Tournament hosted by Lindenwood University at the par-71, 5,811 yard Whitmoor Country Club Tuesday.

The RiverHawks finished in third place with a final round score of 327 and an overall score of 641.

Central Oklahoma won the tournament after carding a 620 while second place finisher Augustana concluded with a 637. Also placing in the top five were Concordia- St. Paul at 645 and Minnesota State-Mankato at 655.

Freshman Baylee Price ended the tournament tied for eighth after shooting an 84 for the final round. Freshman Sofia Castiello shot an 80 to finish tied for 11th.

Sophomore Kayla Schroeder shot a career-low 78 in the tournament and tied for 16th.

Sophomore Gabbi Shelton carded an 85 to finish in 28th.

Junior Arizona Chin shot an 86 to end the tournament tied for 56th.

Northeastern State will be back in action in the spring for the Lady Rattler Roundup hosted by St. Mary’s at the Dominion Country Club in San Antonio, Texas.
