NSU tennis reaches MIAA semifinals

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The No. 31-ranked Northeastern State women’s tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the 2014 MIAA Championship with a 5-1 victory over Washburn Friday afternoon at the Cooper Tennis Complex.

The top-seeded RiverHawks (20-4) won their 15th-straight match and reached the 20-win plateau for the second-straight year. The Ichabods (7-15) saw their season come to a close.

NSU started off by taking the first two doubles matches. Junior Barbora Jirickova and sophomore Kristina Savchenkov posted an 8-2 victory over Gwen Shepler and Kirsten Holle at the second position. Senior Houda Bellamine teamed with freshman Maria Lodge for an 8-2 triumph over Nzingha Banks and Ashlynn Sutton on the third court.

The lone point of the match for Washburn at the top of the doubles order where Casyn Buchman and Jodie Blackim defeated senior Martina Bruzikova and freshman Valeriia Efimenko 8-4.

NSU quickly secured the five points necessary to advance to the semifinals by losing just four matches total between singles courts 3-5.

Jirickova was the first off court with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Holle on the fifth court. Efimenko then wrapped up a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over O’Neill at the third position before Bruzikova topped Moral Carretero 6-0, 6-1 at the fourth flight.

The other three matches went unfinished, but Northeastern State was up a set on all three courts.

NSU will now meet No. 5 Emporia State at 11 a.m. Saturday in the MIAA semifinals after the Hornets upset No. 4 Central Oklahoma.
