Northeastern State falls in NCAA Round of 16

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The No. 20-ranked Northeastern State women’s tennis team saw its season come to a close with a 5-0 loss Wednesday morning to No. 12 California University of Pennsylvania in the 2014 NCAA Division II Championship Round of 16 at Sanlando Park.

The RiverHawks ended the 2014 season at 23-6 overall after having advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 for the eighth time in the last 15 years. The Vulcans (15-2) won their 13th match in a row and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the sixth-straight year.

Northeastern State made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Round of 16 for the first time since 2003-04, and this season marked the 13th time in the last 16 years that NSU qualified for the NCAA Championship.

California (Pa.) began the match strong by sweeping doubles competition, and the team sealed the deal by securing the first two singles decisions.

First off court in doubles play was the No. 3 pair, where Jesse Burrell and Kiefer Shaw defeated senior Houda Bellamine and sophomore Lucia Cerchlanova 8-4. Lucie Sipkova and Lucie Rey, the No. 12-ranked tandem in the nation, defeated senior Martina Bruzikova and freshman Valeriia Efimenko 8-2 at the top of the order.

Cal earned the sweep when Ramona Czakon and Mariela Sarinana defeated junior Barbora Jirickova and sophomore Kristina Savchenkov 8-6 at the second position.

Sarinana topped Cerchlanova 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles, and Shaw clinched the team victory on the fourth singles court by defeated Efimenko 6-3, 6-2. The other four singles matches went unfinished.
