Drury outlasts Northeastern State women in double OT

bjohnson@tahlequahdailypress.com

Drury's Sanayika Shields had three blocks against Northeastern State on Saturday night. None were bigger than her final one.

Shields rejected Kate Bellamy's 3-point attempt with three seconds left in double overtime and Drury survived a 69-67 thriller inside NSU's new event center on "grand opening" night.

Annie Armstrong and Paige Wilson paced Drury with 14 points apiece. Amber Dvorak chipped in with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Freshman Che'Ron Lewis led Northeastern State with 19 points and eight rebounds. The Cushing native was eight of 18 from the floor.

The RiverHawks out-shot Drury — barely. NSU was 38.3 percent (23 of 60) from the field, while Drury was 26 of 70 (37.1 percent).

But the Panthers (3-0) made last shot that counted. Wilson buried a jumper with 60 seconds left and no one else could put the ball through the basket the rest of the game.

With the loss, NSU fell to 0-4 — the first time the RiverHawks have started a season with four straight losses since 1998-1999, a year before current coach Randy Gipson took over.

"We gave a great team effort," Gipson said. "We played good team defense for the most part."

NSU will be in action again Tuesday night at home against Tarleton State.
