Three NSU golfers qualify for state amateur

— Three members of the Northeastern State men’s golf team qualified for the 2013 Oklahoma Golf Association State Amateur Championship this past week. They will all compete July 22-24 at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club.

Former RiverHawk and new graduate assistant Jacob Bartel is set to join soon-to-be senior Zach Tucker and sophomore Jackson Hess as three of the 64 participants in the annual single elimination match-play tournament.

Tucker was one of 103 participants at the July 11 qualifying event at the Lincoln Park West Golf Course in Oklahoma City. The central Oklahoma native fired his lowest-career round of 8-under-par 63 to tie for third at the event.

Bartel and Hess were two of 43 participants from the July 10 event at the Page Belcher Golf Course in Tulsa. Bartel, a Sallisaw native, shot 2-over 73 to tie for ninth, while Hess, who is from Okmulgee, carded a 5-over 76 and tied for 16th.

The first two rounds of the championship will be July 22, with the next two rounds taking place July 23 and the final two rounds scheduled for July 24.

Tucker has earned the No. 3 seed in the championship after his stellar performance at the qualifying event. He will face No. 62 Will Murphy of Tulsa at 8:56 a.m. The winner of that match will play in the second round at 12:58 p.m. against either No. 30 seed Jett Johnson of Norman or No. 35 Blake Jackson of Oklahoma City.

Bartel is slotted at No. 55 and will meet No. 10 Chad Smith of Ardmore at 8:42 a.m. The winner will advance to a 12:51 p.m. tee time against either No. 23 Phillip Bryan of Mustang or No. 42 Ryan Evans of Edmond.

Bryan is a former student-athlete at the University of Oklahoma and is currently the program’s assistant coach.

Hess earned the last seed in the tournament and will go up against No. 1 Chris Muriana of Stillwater at 8 a.m. The winner of that match will compete at 12:30 p.m. against either No. 32 J. Todd Brown of Ada or No. 33 Brett Alcorn of Edmond.

Muriana will be a senior at the University of Central Oklahoma and helped lead the Bronchos to an appearance in the NCAA Division II Championships this past season.
