Northeastern State didn’t lose much on the offensive line once the 2012 season ended. However, the RiverHawks did have to watch Michael Bowie move on to the NFL, where he’s projected to make an impact on Seattle’s offensive line right away. Luckily NSU landed Buck Spurger out of Trinity Valley Community College during the mid-term signing period. At 6 feet, 6 inches tall and 340 pounds, Spurger will immediately be inserted into a prominent role for the RiverHawks, who plan to use the Proctor, Texas, native at either right guard or right tackle.
What are your thoughts on NSU’s trio of running backs, Joel Rockmore, Terrence Dixon and Zack Simmons?
I like them. They run hard and they’re shifty. Zack Simmons didn’t look like he had a shake in his bone, but he hit the hole hard. I like that.
Has learning the play book been the hardest thing for you so far?
They use a little different terminology, but they’re saying the same thing I’m thinking. I can do what they’re saying, I’m just not used to what they’re saying.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I really like the (Illinois) River. Where I’m from, we don’t have many rivers or nothing like that. It’s kind of dry.
You’re from west Texas where it’s pretty flat. Was it big transition to Tahlequah with all the greenery here?
The rain was the biggest difference. While playing JUCO ball, east Texas had a little bit of rain, but I think this place tops it. We get rain once every three or four weeks — if we’re lucky — we’re I’m from.
Are you a professional or college sports fan?
I grew up without TV my entire life, and I was never really a big fan of anything. I kind of liked Texas Tech because my high school coach went there, and my coach from Trinity Valley was a (Texas A&M) Aggie, so I kind of followed them.
Since you didn’t have a television, what did you do while you were growing up?
I worked the ranch a lot, and what most people don’t know about me when they meet me is I read a lot. I used to average three or four books a week.
Are you still able to do that?
Occasionally, when I get the time. It’s kind of slowed down a little bit, but I’ve got a trunk full of books at my house.
What is your favorite book?
That’s hard. I like any westerns, but I’ll read anything I come across.
