Jabarr Adams added to NSU hoops staff

Northeastern State men’s basketball coach Jason Tinsley announced Monday the addition of Jabarr Adams as the new assistant coach for the upcoming 2014-15 campaign.

Adams comes to Tahlequah after having spent the previous two seasons at the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Ala. Prior to his time as the top assistant for the NCAA Division II Falcons, Adams worked as an assistant from 2008-2012 at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas. He also played for Tinsley from 2004-2006 and was a graduate assistant from 2006-2008 at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

“I am blessed to have the opportunity to work as the assistant men’s basketball coach at Northeastern State University,” Adams said. “I hope I am able to positively contribute to the long-standing tradition of excellence in athletics during my time here.

“I look forward to working with coach Tinsley again. He has been my mentor since he coached me as a student-athlete at UNC Pembroke. I also had a chance to serve under him as a graduate assistant. I am excited to continue my professional development under the guidance of a great coach.”

Adams brings a long pedigree of success to Tahlequah. He has been on staff with five teams that competed in the finals of a conference championship, and he has helped guide teams to the NCAA Championship tournament in each of the last five seasons.

Montevallo advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 this past year after competing in the NCAA First Round in 2013. The Falcons also advanced to the finals of the Peach Belt Conference tournament each of the last two seasons and compiled a combined record of 46-16.

The Falcons captured two West Division Regular Season Championships over the past two years and boasted one NABC All-American, one Peach Belt Player of the Year and four Daktronics All-Southeast Region performers.

“I’m excited Jabarr will be joining our program,” Tinsley said. “He played for me and was my GA at UNC Pembroke, so he already has an understanding of how I want things done from both a player’s perspective and a staff member’s perspective. I believe this is vital when you are taking over a new job.”

Tarleton State, an NCAA Division II program, made three appearances in the finals of the Lone Star Conference Championship tournament (2010-12) and amassed a 94-31 record in Adams’ four years at the university.

The Texans competed in the NCAA Championship in his final three years, while advancing to the second round in both 2010 and 2012. The team captured the LSC Regular Season Championship in 2012.

TSU boasted the nation’s top-ranked defense in 2011 and 2012 and featured one NABC All-District honoree and nine All-LSC performers.

“Jabarr will not only be a great asset to me but to the athletics department as a whole. He has good administrative skills, is an outstanding teacher of the game and is a proven recruiter,” Tinsley said. “He has been an assistant at two top-20 Division II programs over the last six years and was very instrumental in their success. Having recruited the caliber of players it takes to compete in the Lone Star and Peach Belt Conferences, he understands what it takes to be successful in the MIAA.”

Adams received a Bachelor of Art degree in social work from UNC Pembroke in 2006. He also earned a Master of Art degree in physical education sport administration from UNC Pembroke in 2008.
