NSU baseball picked 8th in MIAA preseason poll

The Northeastern State baseball team was selected to finish eighth in the 2014 MIAA Preseason coaches’ poll, the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced on Thursday.

The RiverHawks earned 94 points to wedge between seventh place Lindenwood (98) and ninth place Fort Hays State (73).

No. 14-ranked Central Missouri was selected to win the league after earning 12 of 14 first-place votes for 168 points. No. 25 Missouri Western State picked up 144 points and a first-place vote to be tabbed second, and Central Oklahoma was slated third with the final first-place vote and 139 points. Emporia State and Missouri Southern State tied for fourth with 128 points, and Pittsburg State (110) rounded out the top 6.

The RiverHawks finished last season at 28-23 overall with a 25-20 mark in their first year in the MIAA. NSU placed sixth in the league and was just 1.5 games out of third.

NSU returns consensus all-region performer and All-MIAA First Teamer Cody Robinson. The senior finished second in the nation with 16 home runs a year ago. Seniors Kyle Singleton and David Weber were both named All-MIAA Honorable Mention a year ago. Singleton led the country in home runs per game (0.34) last season ago and also tied with Robinson for second in the nation in total home runs.

Northeastern State will begin the 2014 campaign in Durant, Okla., with a noon doubleheader Feb. 11 at Southeastern Oklahoma State.

NSU’s Cody Robinson named preseason All-American

Cody Robinson was named to the 2014 NCBWA Preseason All-America Second Team, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers announced Thursday.

The senior outfielder from Sugar Land, Texas, was one of only two players from the MIAA to be named to any of the three preseason All-American teams (44 players total). Designated hitter Horace Johnson of Fort Hays State joined Robinson on the second team.

Robinson is coming off a 2013 campaign where he tied for second in the nation (with teammate Kyle Singleton) with 16 home runs. He was named to the All-MIAA First Team and landed on all three all-region second teams (Rawlings/ABCA, NCBWA, Daktronics).

Robinson finished the year with a .308 batting average (53-for-172), along with 56 runs batted in, 50 runs scored, 13 doubles, a .674 slugging percentage and a .396 on-base percentage.
