NSU softball loses late in 2014 opener

— STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Northeastern State softball team opened the 2014 campaign with a 6-4 loss to Harding Saturday afternoon at the TSU Softball Complex.

The RiverHawks (0-1) were outhit 13-8 and struck out 10 times on the day in the season opener.

NSU got on the board first when a fielder’s choice from redshirt freshman Krysti Cearley plated both senior Madison Reed and sophomore Saharra Henson. NSU added to its lead in the second when an RBI single from freshman Lauren Flanary brought home junior Alyssa Aguilar.

The Lady Bisons (1-0) cut into the lead in the top of the third when Mackenzie Jones and Jessica Greene both crossed home plate.

Harding tied the game in the top of the sixth and scored three in the top of the seventh. The RiverHawks were only able to muster one run in the home half of the frame as the visitors on the scoreboard secured the season-opening victory.

Sophomore Kayce Wooldridge (0-1) threw a complete game and allowed six runs on 13 hits. She struck out five and walked just one.

Amber Rollins (1-0) also threw a complete game and finished with four runs allowed (two earned) on eight hits, while striking out 10 and not issuing a walk.

NSU will remain in Stephenville for games against Northwestern Oklahoma State (10 a.m.) and Southern Nazarene (5:30 p.m.) Sunday.





NSU Splits Matches in Arkansas

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The No. 25-ranked Northeastern State women’s tennis team split a pair of matches on the final day of the Ouachita Baptist Quad Saturday at the Heflin Tennis Courts.

The RiverHawks (3-1) opened the day with a 5-4 loss to Arkansas Tech (2-0) and then defeated host Ouachita Baptist (0-4) 6-0.

The top results from the two matches came from junior Barbora Jirickova and sophomore Kristina Savchenkov, who were both 3-0 Saturday and finished 7-0 over the four weekend matches.

Arkansas Tech 5, No. 25 Northeastern State 4

The first point of the match went to NSU after the RiverHawks won 8-3 on the second doubles court. Savchenkov and Jirickova topped Bohdana Sardak and Olga Leyshyna.

Seniors Houda Bellamine and Martina Bruzikova lost 8-3 at the top of the card to Nozomi Matsuoka and Tamara Bell. Laura Sanchez and Camila Roca finished of NSU in doubles competition with an 8-3 victory over sophomore Lucia Cerchlanova and freshman Maria Lodge.

The Golden Suns pulled ahead 3-1 when Bell topped Cerchlanova 6-2, 6-3 on the fourth singles court. Bruzikova cut into the lead with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Leyshyna at the second position, but Sardak put ATU on the brink of victory with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Bellamine at the third flight.

Jirickova and Savchenkov did everything they could for the RiverHawk, as they won at No. 6 and No. 1 respectively. Jirickova topped Allison Grahl 6-0, 6-1 and Savchenkov, the nation’s No. 49-ranked player, defeated Matsuoka 6-7 (9-11), 6-3, 6-2.

The match came down to the fifth singles court, where Roca was able to get past Lodge 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-4.



Northeastern State 6, Ouachita Baptist 0

The Lady Tigers entered the match with just four players, and Northeastern State made quick work of the host school.

Lodge and Jirickova topped Polina Tysymbalova and Camila Ferreira 8-1 on the top doubles court, and Savchenkov and Cerchlanova defeated Mary Wolf and Keely Howk 8-2.

Sophomore Kate Nesbitt registered her second-career victory with a 6-3 decision over Howk. Jirickova won in a walkover, and Bruzikova and Cerchlanova also picked up straight-set triumphs.

Northeastern State is now scheduled to meet Seminole State College at noon Feb. 11 in Broken Arrow at the Indian Springs Country Club.
