NSU softball posts 5-4 win over Southern Arkansas

— WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Northeastern State softball team defeated Southern Arkansas 5-4 on the first day of the Holiday Inn at the Falls Invitational Friday night at Mustangs Park.

The RiverHawks (2-2) scored three first-inning runs and added two in the fourth before holding on for the one-run triumph over the Lady Muleriders (4-4).

Senior first baseman Allyson Pogue led the charge for NSU with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate. She drove home two runners and scored once. Sophomore pitcher Kayce Wooldridge (1-1) tossed a complete game and conceded four runs (one earned) on nine hits. She struck out eight and walked just two.

Southern Arkansas outhit Northeastern State 9-7, and NSU had four errors to just three from SAU.

Shelby Miller was the only Lady Mulerider with multiple hits, as she went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Taylor Clifton started the game in the circle and lasted just 0.2 innings. She conceded three unearned runs on three hits before being replaced by Miranda Cuff. Cuff (0-1) threw the next 4.1 frames and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits. Miller relieved Cuff and tossed a perfect sixth for SAU.

Northeastern State jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning thanks in large part to a two-out, two-run double from Pogue. The Lady Muleriders got on the board with three runs in the fourth, but the RiverHawks responded with two in the home half of the frame to pull ahead 5-3.

Audrey Farfan registered a two-out triple in the top of the seventh to score Miller and bring the score to 5-4, but Chelsea Ivy struck out swinging to end the game.

The RiverHawks will now face Cameron at 3 p.m. and Midwestern State at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
