BREAKING NEWS: Larry Gipson to retire

Northeastern State men's basketball coach Larry Gipson announced he will retire after the 2013-2014 season.

Gipson is currently in his 17th season at NSU, where he won a national championship in 2003. He is second on the school list in victories (276), and he reached the 100- and 200-win total faster than any other coach in NSU history.

Currently, Gipson's 2013-2014 team is 12-10 overall and 7-8 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

Gipson, out of Heidelberg College, started his collegiate coaching career at the University of Tulsa under Nolan Richardson.

Gipson missed most of the 2011-2012 season after being diagnosed with cancer. He returned for the 2012-2013 season to guide his team to a 19-9 mark, which garnered a spot in the NCAA tournament.

The Tahlequah Daily Press will have more coverage of Gipson's retirement in Tuesday's edition.
