Q&A: Bobby Pointer, NSU defensive lineman

Don't let his exterior — 6-foot-1 and 287 pounds — fool you, Bobby Pointer is a true horse connoisseur. He loves riding horses and he especially loves to train them. He's hoping one day to get into the horse racing field. But until then, he'll continue to hold down the fort on Northeastern State's defensive line. In 2013, Pointer, a Dewar native, will be entering his final season as a senior for the RiverHawks.

In high school, you played some eight-man football. What was that transition like for you when you went to college?

At my position, it really wasn't that big of a transition. You still run and tackle. It's block, run and tackle, just like football has always been.

You mentioned that you moved from Detroit to Dewar before your ninth-grade year. Was that like going from a place like Detroit to Dewar?

It was a cultural shock and a little slower. There were a lot of things different: talk different and do a lot of things different. But overall, I like (Dewar) more.

Do you consider Detroit or Dewar your hometown?

I call Dewar my hometown.

Is there a chance you're one of the few Triple Crown fans on the team?

Well, yes. I've actually only missed one race in the last couple of years. It was one of the Kentucky Derbys.

Do you have a favorite horse?

It would probably have to be Zenyatta.

Was it the move to Dewar that got you interested in horseback riding and training?

Me and Ronnell (Lewis) rode horses every day for years. That's what we did on the side was break horses. He actually rodeoed and rode bulls. I told him he might have a career in that when he's done playing [professional football].

Where do you do all your horse stuff now? Do you have horses here in Tahlequah?

No, I actually have horses back at home on Tiger Mountain. We have some land that way and keep them there.

What is your favorite thing to do in Tahlequah?

Probably go the (Illinois) River and swim. We got to Boy Scout Hole and jump off a cliff out there. It's always a good time.

In 10 years, what do you see yourself doing? Coaching and horse racing together?

I see them together. Hopefully I have a couple of championship rings on my fingers, and that'll make my decision a little easier.
