NSU men slide to 7th at Super Regional

From Staff reports

— KENOSHA, Wisc. — The Northeastern State men’s golf team slipped to seventh place after Tuesday’s second round of the 2013 NCAA Division II Central/Midwest Super Regional on the par-72, 6,964-yard The Club at Strawberry Creek.

The RiverHawks shot 294 in the second round and sit at 8-over-par 584 for the tournament. No. 23 Missouri-St. Louis (283-290) and No. 18 Central Oklahoma (289-284) are tied for the lead at 3-under 573. Central Missouri (287-287) is a stroke behind the leaders at 2-under 574.

NSU junior Zach Tucker fired his second-career round in the 60s to keep NSU in the hunt. He posted a 3-under 69 Tuesday and sits in 12th overall at 1-under 143. Freshman Jackson Hess carded a 76 in the second round and is at even par 144 for the tournament, tied for 15th.

Senior Kyle Fouts shot 75 and sits in a tie for 31st at 4-over 148, sophomore Josh Strimple fired a 74 and is tied for 54th at 6-over 150, and senior Jacob Bartel carded an 80 and is tied for 85th at 11-over 155.

“Zach saved our bacon today, and Josh and Kyle also fought like crazy on the back nine to keep us in it,” Varner said. “We were heading too far off the bubble to realistically have a chance tomorrow, and then those three stopped the bleeding. They turned it around and shot 4-under on the last six holes.”

NSU, Ferris State and Indianapolis are all paired together for Wednesday’s final round. The three teams will be the final groups teeing off on the back nine, and they will set out for action at 12:50 p.m.
