The Northeastern State men’s basketball team has been selected to compete in the 2013 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship, it was announced on the selection show Sunday night.
The RiverHawks (19-8, 12-6 MIAA) have earned the No. 7 seed in the NCAA Central Region and will face No. 2 seed Winona State University at 2:30 p.m. March 16 in Mankato, Minn.
“This team is really special to me because of all the circumstances that have been documented about last year and the past couple of seasons," NSU coach Larry Gipson said. "I really enjoy this team and working with them every day. This was a long weekend because I knew we were somewhere on the bubble. This just caps off a great season."
NSU finished third in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association after being picked by the media and coaches to place 14th. The RiverHawks were upset in the MIAA Championship quarterfinals by Northwest Missouri State University on March 7.
The Warriors have a 24-7 overall record and finished second in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with a 17-5 mark. They are ranked No. 23 in the NABC/Division II Men’s Basketball national poll, and they were upset by Bemidji State University in the NSIC Championship quarterfinals March 2.
Northeastern State will compete in the NCAA Championship for the first time since winning the national title in 2003. The RiverHawks will be making their fifth trip to the tournament since joining the NCAA in 1996-97.
