NSU tennis gets past Lady Bison

— The No. 35-ranked Northeastern State women’s tennis team defeated Oklahoma Baptist 5-4 Thursday afternoon at the NSU Tennis Complex.

The RiverHawks (5-2) split the single matches and secured two of three doubles matches over the Lady Bisons (5-3).

OBU won the first point of the match when the team of Anastasiia Baranova and Kateryna Shkot defeated junior Barbora Jiricikova and sophomore Kristina Savchenkov 8-1 on the top doubles court. Shkot and Baranova are the No. 6-ranked doubles tandem in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

NSU tied the match when senior Martina Bruzikova and sophomore Kate Nesbitt teamed up for the first time to earn an 8-2 triumph over Kathryn Sild and Kelsi Lord on the third court. The RiverHawks picked up just their second point at No. 3 doubles this season.

Sophomore Lucia Cerchlanova and freshman Maria Lodge tilted doubles competition in favor of the green and white when they defeated Ashlynn Abbe and Olivia Charvat 8-5 at the second flight.

Cerchlanova then turned around and gave the RiverHawks a 3-1 advantage when she defeated Abbe 6-2, 6-0 on the third singles court. Lodge took down Alex Morales 6-0, 6-1 at the fifth flight and Jirickova clinched the team victory when she defeated Charvat 6-2, 6-2 at the fourth position.

With Northeastern State up 5-1, the Lady Bisons swept the final three courts to push the score the final 5-4 margin.

The RiverHawks will next be in action at 2 p.m. Saturday at Central Arkansas in Conway, Ark.



Tulsa holds off UTEP

EL PASO, Texas — Shaquille Harrison scored 15 points as Tulsa held off Texas-El Paso 65-60 on Thursday.

Despite shooting 2 of 19 from beyond the arc, the Golden Hurricane (16-12, 11-3) tied for the Conference USA lead with three other teams, while UTEP (20-9, 10-4) dropped a game back.

Tulsa ended the first half with an 8-2 run and led 30-24 at the break.

The teams were tied at 48 with 6:05 left, but D’Andre Wright and Harrison made back-to-back buckets, then Harrison added a dunk to send Tulsa up by six. UTEP got it to three with 49 seconds left after a pair of Julian Washburn free throws but the Miners missed two 3-pointers in the last 30 seconds.

James Woodard added 13 points for Tulsa and Rashad Smith had 11 points.

John Bohannon led UTEP with 20 points and 10 rebounds, Julian Washburn had 14 points and Vince Hunter finished with 12.



Oral Roberts beats Lamar

TULSA — Shawn Glover scored 25 points, Korey Billbury added 20, and Oral Roberts beat Lamar 75-67 Thursday night.

Brandon Conley scored 16 and the Golden Eagles (15-13, 9-6 Southland Conference) out-rebounded Lamar 37-32, including 13-8 offensive boards.

Lamar led 12-3 to start the game, then led 18-8 on a trey by Anthony Holliday, but Oral Roberts ripped runs of 10-2 and 8-2, and Glover’s dunk and trey put the Golden Eagles up 34-30 at halftime.

Oral Roberts opened the second half with a 9-2 run and led by 14, but the Cardinals (3-24, 2-13) cut the lead to eight on an 8-2 run capped by a layup by Holliday. Free throws by Glover ended a 10-2 run and the Golden Eagles led 64-49 at 7:07, then kept the Cardinals at arm’s length.

Holliday led Lamar with 18, Donovan Ross and Nimrod Hilliard scored 13 apiece, and Amos Wilson had 10.
