The Northeastern State baseball team dropped a 13-11, 10-inning decision to the No. 5-ranked Central Missouri Mules Monday afternoon at Thomas C. Rousey Field.
The RiverHawks (6-7, 6-7 MIAA) held an 11-7 advantage after eight innings, but the Mules (9-1, 6-0 MIAA) scored four in the ninth and came from behind to sweep the series.
“The biggest factor in the ninth inning was that Central Missouri didn’t quit,” NSU coach Travis Janssen said. “There are a lot of teams that would be packing their bags when they are down by four with one inning left, but they didn’t do that. We just couldn’t get those last two outs.”
Junior right fielder Cody Robinson hit two home runs for the second-straight game, and he finished with four runs batted in and three runs scored.
“He’s swinging the bat and doing a great job for us,” Janssen said of Robinson. “He’s providing a good punch for us in the middle of the order, and we hope that continues.”
Senior shortstop Kegan Knight and sophomore catcher David Weber were both 3-for-5, and they combined for five RBI and four runs. Weber hit his first homer of the season.
Senior Trevor Walch threw the first 5 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits. Sophomore Hayden Walch threw the next three innings and allowed four runs on four hits. Junior Addison Williams (1-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on two hits over the final 1 2/3 frames.
Central Missouri went through six pitchers, with Dany Coulombe (1-0) earning the win. Starter Travis Higgs was tagged for seven runs on nine hits in four innings.
John Oropeza led UCM with three hits, two runs batted in and two runs scored. Brad Wilson, Tucker Cross and Chase Graskewicz all hit home runs for the Mules.
Northeastern State will next be in action Friday and Saturday for a three-game set at Southwest Baptist.
