NSU briefs

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Northeastern State’s lead over Emporia State didn’t last long in the first round of the MIAA tournament on Friday.

The RiverHawks ended up falling to the Hornets 6-1. NSU (26-23) will now have to win to keep its season alive.

The RiverHawks went out in front against Emporia State, scoring on Cayce Coleman’s RBI double, which brought home Allyson Pogue, in the second inning.

Then Emporia State responded with six unanswered runs to end any doubt about the outcome. The Hornets tallied three runs in both the second and third innings.

All of the Hornets’ runs were scored on singles. Taylor Zordel and Katie Huffman both drove in two runs apiece for Emporia State, which had 12 hits.

NSU ended up with five hits.

Tossing all six innings, Kayce Wooldridge was tagged with the pitching loss for NSU after allowing six runs (three earned) on 12 hits.

Karley Schmelzer picked up the victory for the Hornets (34-16).

NSU will now play Northwest Missouri State today at 11 a.m. The game was originally supposed to be played on Friday until inclement weather arrived in the area. Emporia State will take on Central Oklahoma in the winner’s bracket at 11 a.m.

NSU, Mo. Southern set to play

JOPLIN, Mo. — The first-round series of the MIAA tournament between Northeastern State and Missouri Southern was postponed again on Thursday because of inclement weather in southwest Missouri. The two teams will now attempt to start the three-game series today at 3 p.m.

Game 2 of the series will be Sunday at noon. If a third game is necessary, it will be Sunday at 2 p.m.

The winner of the series advances to the next round of the MIAA tournament at Community America Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.
