NSU women qualify for NCAA finals

From Staff reports

— COUNTRY CLUB VILLAGE, Mo. — The Northeastern State women’s golf team is headed back to nationals after finishing third Tuesday at the 2013 NCAA Central Super Regional Championship. The tournament was held at the par-72, 5,921-yard St. Joseph Country Club.

The top three teams and the top three individuals not from an advancing team all earned berths to the 2013 NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championship May 15-18 at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.

NSU will be returning to nationals for the first time since 2006. The team will also be making its seventh appearance since 2001 (2001-06).

“I’m very proud of the girls for advancing to nationals. This was our goal from the beginning of the year,” NSU assistant coach Brady Wood said. “The course played hard and had the longest rough we have seen all year, but we adapted well over the course of the last three days and we got the job done.”

Northeastern State shot a final round total of 323 to finish at 111-over-par 975. No. 17 Central Oklahoma shot 87-over 915 to claim the regional championship, while No. 22 Augustana College finished runner-up at 100-over 964. All three teams have advanced to the final site.

Freshman McCandren Lewis blistered the course Tuesday with the tournament’s lowest round of 73. She jumped 19 spots in the standings to tie for sixth overall at 23-over 239 (86-80-73).

Sophomore Alex Koch shot 83 in the final round and tied for 16th overall at 31-over 247 (80-84-83). Senior Whitney McAteer finished in a tie for 21st at 32-over 248 (83-84-81).

Senior Kelsey Kirkpatrick, NSU’s leader for the first two days, recorded her only two triple bogeys of the championship and shot a final-round 88 to tie for 23rd at 33-over 249 (79-82-88).

Freshman Kayla Schroeder rounded out the team score with a 39-over 255 (80-89-86) to tie for 31st.

Rebecka Surtevall of Arkansas Tech took home top individual honors with a 15-over 231. Surtevall, Ashlynn Hall (238) of Southwestern Oklahoma State and Emily Plyler (239) of Harding also qualified for nationals as individuals.
