NSU improves by a stroke, sits in 8th at NCAA Championships

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The Northeastern State women’s golf team sits in eighth place after Thursday’s second round of the 2013 NCAA Division II Championships on the par-72, 6,228-yard Legends Course at LPGA International.

The RiverHawks improved their team score by one stroke from Wednesday’s first round, shooting 317 in the second round, but they slipped two spots to eighth. The team checked in at 59-over-par 635.

No. 1 Nova Southeastern shot 294 today and leads the tournament at 10-over 586. The Sharks are the four-time-defending champions and are the only team in the field who has ever won the national title.

No. 2 Lynn is second at 13-over 589, and No. 6 Barry is third at 20-over 596.

Freshman McCandren Lewis led NSU with a 77 in the second round. She is tied for 49th at 17-over 161.

Senior Whitney McAteer continues to pace the RiverHawks. She shot 80 Thursday and is tied for 30th at 11-over 155. Fellow senior Kelsey Kirkpatrick is tied for 32nd at 12-over 156. Sophomore Alex Koch is tied for 54th at 19-over 163, and freshman Kayla Schroeder is 71st at 49-over 193.

Daniela Ortiz of Nova Southeastern shot 75 today and leads the individual tournament at 2-under. She sits one stroke ahead of three others.

Third-round tee times will be released later.

Northeastern State is making its seventh appearance in the national finals and the first since 2007. The seven appearances are tied for fifth-most in NCAA Division II history and are the most of any team participating at this year’s championships.

The championships consist of both team and individuals competition conducted concurrently. All participants will compete throughout the entire 72 holes of competition. In the team competition, the low four scores for each team will count in each day’s total score.
