NSU women down to 3rd at Super Regional

— COUNTRY CLUB VILLAGE, Mo. — The Northeastern State women’s golf team slipped to third after Monday’s second round of the 2013 NCAA Central Super Regional Championship at the par-72, 5,921-yard St. Joseph Country Club.

The top three teams and the top three individuals not from an advancing team will earn berths to the 2013 NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championship May 15-18 at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.

No. 17 Central Oklahoma improved from third to first after carding a 318 in the second round. UCO leads the way at 65-over-par 641. No. 22 Augustana College is three strokes behind the Bronchos at 68-over 644. The RiverHawks shot 330 Monday and sits at 76-over 652.

Arkansas Tech is 12 strokes behind NSU in fourth.

Freshman McCandren Lewis fired the low round of the day for NSU of 80. She sits in solo 25th at 22-over 166. Senior Kelsey Kirkpatrick shot 82 in the second round and is tied for eighth at 17-over 161.

NSU will begin teeing off in the final round at 10:30 a.m. today.

RiverHawks open NCAA Regional in 6th

KENOSHA, Wisc. — The Northeastern State men’s golf team finds itself in sixth place after Monday’s first round of the 2013 NCAA Division II Central/Midwest Super Regional on the par-72, 6,964-yard The Club at Strawberry Creek.

The RiverHawks opened with a 2-over-par 290 and trail leader Missouri-St. Louis by seven strokes. Bellarmine (-3), Nebraska-Kearney (-1) and Central Missouri (-1) also shot under par as a team in the first round.

Freshman Jackson Hess fired a 4-under 68 to lead NSU, and he is tied for fourth in the individual standings. UCM’s Robby Hughey is the tournament leader after opening with a 7-under 65.

Senior Kyle Fouts shot 1-over 73 and is tied for 26th. Junior Zach Tucker is tied for 35th at 2-over 74, senior Jacob Bartel is tied for 53rd at 3-over 75 and sophomore Josh Strimple is tied for 63rd at 4-over 76.

Northeastern State will begin teeing off in the second of three rounds at 12:50 p.m. today.
