NSU golfer in OGA Round of 16

OKLAHOMA CITY — Northeastern State golfer Zach Tucker won two matches on Monday afternoon, advancing to the Round of 16 at the Oklahoma Golf Association's State Amateur Championship.

Tucker, the No. 3 seed in the 64-player field, knocked off Will Murphy, 6 and 5, to begin the tournament at Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club. Tucker — a Oklahoma City native and Putnam City North alum — then followed that up with a 3 and 2 victory over Jett Johnson of Norman.

"The first eight holes were back and forth, but I made a great birdie on the 18th hole to get 1 up and he struggled coming in," said Tucker of his match with Johnson, who Tucker described as one of his "best friends."

"The changing point of the match was an up and down for par on the par 4 second hole (the 11th hole of the match). I knew if I got up and down then I would win the hole. And I did. It gave me a lot of confidence coming down the stretch."

Tucker will take on Jeffrey Topp of Midwest City on Tuesday morning. The winner will play another 18-hole match against the winner of the Edmond's Taylor Moore or Grove's Kacey Threet in the quarterfinals.

Two other NSU golfers didn't fare as well on the first day of the tournament. Jackson Hess was ousted by the tournament's No. 1 seed Chris Muriana 4 and 3, and Jacob Bartel lost 1 up to No. 10 seed Michael Hampton.
