Q&A: Marquintin Grant, NSU safety

Marquintin Grant is well-versed in what it takes to play in the defensive backfield. In high school, Grant logged time as a cornerback, and at Northeastern State, Grant is a 5-foot-10, 175-pound safety. He redshirted during the 2012 campaign will serve as a backup to either Kyler Harris at strong safety or Victor Johnson at free safety.

What is it about playing the defensive backfield that you enjoy so much?

Hitting somebody. If you’re angry, you can take it out on someone else on the other team. Getting interceptions. I used to be an offensive player, so when I get the ball in my hands, I like to make something happen — and score touchdowns. I just like helping the team out.

You’re only a freshman, but what do you hope to do after college?

I want to go to the NFL. Or be a football coach.

What level of football would you want to coach?

It really doesn’t matter. I just want to be around the game of football.

What age did you start playing football?

I started playing when I was 10. I wanted to play when I was younger, but when I was younger I had asthma real bad, so my parents weren’t real sure if they wanted me to play.

Is that still a problem?

No, I’m good now. I still have asthma, but it really doesn’t bother me until I get sick or something.

If you go into coaching, what are you hoping to coach? Secondary?

I would love to coach the secondary or maybe special teams. I really like special teams a lot, because in high school that’s what I really did.

You said you liked to hunt and fish. What are some of the biggest catches you ever recorded?

In hunting, I killed an eight-point during my senior year in high school. I always hunted since I was a little kid, but that was my first kill. Well, not my first kill. I actually killed a 500-pound hog in Fairfield, Texas — that’s where my dad’s side of the family is from. In fishing, I’ve caught some pretty big catfish.

Are you a sports fan?

Yeah, my favorite team in the NFL is the Minnesota Vikings.

What about Minnesota do you like?

Adrian Peterson. That’s one of my favorite players.

Being a Vikings fan and growing up in the Dallas area, do you kind of talk some trash to your friends back home?

A lot, especially when they play Dallas. I just say stuff like, ‘get ready to get beat by Adrian Peterson.’
