BROKEN ARROW — The Northeastern State men’s golf team is tied for first after Monday’s opening rounds of the 2013 NSU Classic, which is being held at the par-72, 7,005-yard Emerald Falls Golf Club.
The RiverHawks sit at 26-over 602 (296-306) after the first two rounds, and they are tied with Central Missouri (302-300). Arkansas Tech finds itself a stroke behind, while Central Oklahoma is in fourth at 608 (312-296) and Southwestern Oklahoma State is fifth at 610 (304-306).
Freshmen Marc Johnson (71-77) and Tate Williamson are tied for fifth overall at 4-over 148.
The RiverHawks will be in the final group, which will begin teeing off at 9:40 a.m.
NSU women sitting in 2nd
GOODYEAR, Ariz. — The No. 22-ranked Northeastern State women’s golf team sits in second place after shooting 308 in Monday’s opening round of the Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate Tournament held at the par-72, 5,995 yard Coldwater Golf Club.
Northeastern State freshmen Baylee Price and Sofia Castiello lead the RiverHawks after each shooting 3-over par rounds of 75. They are currently tied for eighth place.
The RiverHawks currently sit tied for second place with Oklahoma Christian while Western Washington (302) is in first place.
Northeastern State will return to the course for the final round teeing off at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
NSU pair ousted in ITA semifinals
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Northeastern State women’s tennis team saw both players remaining in the main singles draw eliminated in the semifinals Sunday at the 2013 USTA/ITA Central Region Championships held at the Cooper Tennis Complex.
Senior Houda Bellamine, the tournament’s No. 9 seed, had yet to drop a set in her four previous matches, but she was defeated 6-2, 6-2 by No. 8 Mehak Singh of Southwest Baptist.
Singh’s teammate, No. 1 seed Fanni Varga, defeated NSU sophomore No. 7 Kristina Savchenkov, the No. 7 seed, 6-2, 6-4 on the other half of the draw.
Varga would defeat Singh later in the day to claim the singles championship and the right to represent the Central Region at the 2013 USTA/ITA Women’s Tennis Championships.
The squad is now scheduled to compete at the UCA Invitational on Friday in Conway, Ark.
