NSU softball comes up hitless as Fort Hays State sweeps

The Northeastern State softball team lost a doubleheader to Fort Hays State Friday afternoon at RiverHawks Park.

The RiverHawks (20-10, 7-3 MIAA) lost the first game 1-0 to the Tigers (17-10, 7-3 MIAA) and dropped game two 3-0 in extra innings.

First game: FHSU 1, NSU 0

Northeastern State and Fort Hays State went scoreless through four innings until the Tigers plated one run in the top of the fifth in what would be the lone run of the contest. Third baseman Kylie Strand scored the lone run for FHSU on a single to center field by shortstop Kellsi Olsen. Strand reached base on a double to right field.

The Tigers held their 1-0 lead through seven innings to beat the RiverHawks 1-0.

Fort Hays State hurler, Paxton Duran threw a no-hitter against Northeastern State. She struck out seven and only allowed three base runners (two walks and one hit-by-pitch).

Senior Shelbie Wagnon (2-1) took the loss in the circle after throwing a complete game. She allowed five hits and only one run.

Second game: FHSU 3, NSU 0

Neither team scored in regulation, so an extra frame was needed to decide proceedings.

In the visiting half of the eighth frame with two outs on the board and two on base, FHSU hitter Danie Brinkmann struck a home run over right center to give the Tigers the decisive 3-0 lead. NSU was unlucky at bat and dropped game two 3-0 to FHSU in extra innings.

Fort Hays State outhit NSU 7-2. Senior Madison Reed and junior Alyssa Aguilar recorded the two hits for Northeastern State.

Sophomore Kayce Wooldridge (9-5) suffered the loss in the circle after throwing eight frames. She allowed seven hits and three runs.

NSU will host a doubleheader with Nebraska-Kearney at 10 a.m. March 21 at RiverHawks Park.
