Valcarcel scores 2, NSU defeats OBU 2-1

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — The Northeastern State women’s soccer team defeated Ouachita Baptist 2-1 Sunday afternoon at the OBU Soccer Complex.

The RiverHawks (6-2-0, 0-2 MIAA) gave the Tigers (6-1) their first loss of the season.

Ouachita Baptist took the lead late in the first half and maintained the 1-0 advantage until the 53rd minute when senior midfielder Renee’ Valcarcel scored on an assist from senior midfielder Elizabeth Cudjoe.

Valcarcel then scored again 42 seconds later from a pass from freshman forward Nea Sunila who was assisted by freshman midfielder Kelsey McIntyre to improve the score 2-1. The goal would hold up as Valcarcel notched the game-winning goal.

“I thought we played very similarly to how we did on Friday, but we were just able to capitalize more on our chances,” NSU coach Chase Wooten said. “Ouachita Baptist was much improved from a year ago. They made us work for everything we got today.”

NSU outshot OBU 25-12 and had the advantage in corner kicks 10-4.

Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Woodruff saw all 90 minutes of play and made seven saves and allowed one goal.

Valcarcel registered her first-career two-goal game, and she scored the fourth game-winner of her career.

The RiverHawks will host MIAA opponent Northwest Missouri State (2-4-1, 1-1 MIAA) for homecoming weekend. The match will be 7 p.m. Oct. 4 at DeLoache Field.
