NSU teams split at Lincoln

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Jermaine Bransford continued his strong senior campaign as he led the Northeastern State men’s basketball team to a 57-45 victory over Lincoln University Saturday night on the MIAA Network.

The forward recorded his second-straight double-double with 16 points and a career-high 14 rebounds in 37 minutes.

“Jermaine is playing with a lot of confidence and enthusiasm right now,” NSU coach Larry Gipson said. “He is a high-energy kid with a lot of athleticism. When he shows up ready to play, he’s a handful for anybody to deal with.”

Bransford has two career double-doubles on his resume, both coming in the last two outings. He is now averaging 15.4 points and 8.4 rebounds a night.

Junior guard Bryton Hobbs led all scorers with 19 points as the RiverHawks improved to 7-1 on the year and 2-0 in the MIAA.

NSU led for the majority of the contest and did not trail in the second half. Lincoln (2-8, 1-1 MIAA) got to within two points at 45-43 with 5:33 to play, but the visitors closed the game on a 12-2 run.

“The game was in the balance, and we just scored and scored, while also shutting them down on the other end of the floor,” Gipson said. “The next thing we knew, we were up double digits. Our effort tonight may not have been a thing of beauty, but we battled hard and earned the win.

Cedric Ridle led the home team with 16 points, and Charles Cole added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Blue Tigers.

“Lincoln is a very tough environment,” Gipson said. “They always pull an upset or two on their home floor during the conference season, so I’m extremely happy we were able to escape with a win.”

Northeastern State will now step out of conference play to close out the first semester. The team will travel to Quincy, Ill., for the QU Holiday Tournament. NSU will face Ohio Valley University at 5:15 p.m. Dec. 18.
