NSU women end losing streak, upset No. 21 Emporia State


— The Northeastern State women’s basketball team kicked off MIAA play with a 63-51 victory over No. 21 Emporia State Wednesday night at Jack Dobbins Field House.

The RiverHawks (4-3, 1-0 MIAA) were playing their first game as members of their new conference, while the Lady Hornets fell to 3-2 on the year and 0-1 in league play.

NSU shot a season-best 51 percent from the field (24-47), while converting 8 of 21 (38 percent) from downtown. The team was led in scoring by senior guard Taylor Lewis, who scored 21 points on 6-for-12 shooting. She hit four three’s in the contest.

Senior forward Sarah Green added 13 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two blocks, while junior forward Carrington Fox contributed a career-high 13 points and seven rebounds. Green was 6-for-6 from the field and Fox was 6 of 9.

Northeastern State outrebounded Emporia State 33-29, and NSU also had 19 assists to just nine from ESU.

The Lady Hornets were led in scoring by Laura Patrick, who had 15. Rachel Hanf added 12 for the visitors. Emporia State shot 31 percent from the field (15-49) and 35 percent from behind the arc (8-23).

Northeastern State will next travel to Jefferson City, Mo., for a 1:07 p.m. clash Dec. 8 with Lincoln. The game between the RiverHawks and Blue Tigers will be televised by the MIAA Network.
