Phebie Lois Hayes


TAHLEQUAH —  Phebie Lois Hayes 90, of Hulbert, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 5 in Tahlequah.

Lois was born in Butler County, Ky., on Dec. 12, 1922, to Anderson and Martha (Lacefield) Gary. She married Chester Clemens in 1950, and together had two beautiful daughters, Joyce and Shirley. After Chester passed, she married Earl Hayes.

Nothing made her day like wheeling and dealing at a good yard sale. Lois loved to cook for her family and made the best applesauce they ever tasted. She enjoyed working in her flowers and garden, and spent many a day searching in the woods for ginseng. Lois loved going to the Cherokee Elder Care program in Tahlequah, where she was known as the Queen of Checkers. Lois also loved to dance it up when the music was playing.

Lois is preceded in death by her parents, Anderson and Martha Gary; brothers, Lonnie, Finnis, Johnnie and Ezra; sisters, Janie Crockriel, Gertrude Brooks, and Beulah Embry; and grandson, Calvin Todd Beasley.

She is survived by daughters, Joyce Copeland of Hulbert, and Shirley Barrett and husband Rick of Smyrna, Tenn.; three granddaughters, Sherry Jackson, Dava Taylor and Amanda Copeland; grandson, Shane Surratt; seven great-grandchildren, Terri Pruitt, Robin Jackson, Autumn Howard, Aurora Autry, Ethan Autry, Dalton Autry all of Hulbert, and Breanna Taylor of Buffalo, Ky.; one great-great-grandson, Jackson Pruitt; a brother Amos and wife Eulma Gary of Caneyville, Ky.; two special nieces, Marie Reid and Mary Fishburn; and many other greatly loved nieces and nephews.

Final arrangements are under the care of Green Country Funeral Home, Tahlequah. Interment will be at Red Hill Cemetery in LaRue County, Ky., where she will be placed with the love of her life, Oswald Hodge. Lois was loved so much and she will be greatly missed by all her family.
